Federal Data Shows Teen Marijuana Use Is Declining in America

Teenagers Marijuana

Self-reported cannabis use by teenagers continues to decline in the U.S., according to federal data by the United States Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

SAMHSA’s 2018 report found that past-year cananbis use by those teens ages 12 to 17 fell consistently since 2002, from 15.8% to 12.5%, NORML reported. Past-year youth cannabis use has fallen 8% since 2012 when Colorado and Washington implemented recreational marijuana laws.

The data also shows a consistent year-over-year reduction in the rate of so-called “marijuana use disorder” among American teens – a finding consistent with other marijuana-related studies.

Data from a study published in July reported that states with “recreational marijuana laws were associated with an eight percent decrease in the odds of marijuana use and a nine percent decrease in the odds of frequent marijuana use” among American teenagers.
